Why Pastoral Coaching?
“Why Journey Pastoral Coaching?”
Five years ago, the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God raised the alarm that the AG needed four thousand – 4000 – new ministers immediately. He stated that the AG pastorate was greying – the average age then was 58 years old – and young, trained and anointed ministers were needed immediately to step up into leadership.
As a missionary and campus pastor who has worked with hundreds of churches, I knew then, as now, that this is true. I was more than thankful to hear this call.
Think of it: wouldn’t it be amazing to see 4000 visionary, energetic, anointed young adults enter vocational ministry! What a difference they could make as they lead in the power of God’s Spirit!
But . . .
Studies by The Barna Group, The Schaeffer Institute, etc, etc, have found that 9 of 10 who enter vocational ministry do not last. They give up. They leave the ministry. 9 of 10.
And 5 in 10 of those who give up will do so during their first 5 years. 5 of 10 in 5.
Less than satisfactory numbers, to say the least
Think of it this way.
If 4000 young adults enter the ministry, only 400 are going to make it. Only 400 are going to survive. And of the 3600 who give up, 1800 will leave the ministry less than 5 years after beginning what they believed to be a lifetime calling in ministry.
What this means then is that the AG doesn’t need 4000 young adults to enter the ministry, we need 40,000 young adults if we are to see 4000 ministers added not just for the now, but for the long term.
Or is there a better way?
Pastoral coaching: experienced ministers walking with young ministers to help change the numbers and see young adults not only enter the ministry, but remain in the ministry, not only survive in ministry, but thrive in ministry.
All of this is one important answer to the question, “Why Journey Pastoral Coaching?” Journey exists to change the equation, one minister, one pastor, one missionary, one director, one teacher at a time.
And helping to change the equation for ministers, we help change the equation for the churches they lead. Helping to change the equation for the churches they lead, we help change the eternal equation for people everywhere.
Journey Pastoral Coaching provides pastoral coaching to Millennial ministers.
Saddled with large student debt, just beginning to set up homes and start families, and serving in low paying first and second positions, Millennials are those who most desire but can least afford to pay for pastoral coaching.
So we offer it to them at no cost.
We are able to do so through the faithful and generous gifts of friends who want to see young leaders not only enter the ministry, but remain in the ministry. If you or your church would like to help Millennial ministers in 21 US states and 5 nations build strong for a lifetime in ministry, please click here to contact us by email or click on the link to support Journey through PayPal.
Thank you.
